Zigbee vs Z-Wave vs Matter: what actually differs

Zigbee and Z-Wave are radios. Matter is not a radio at all, it's a software layer that runs on top of Wi-Fi or Thread. Confusing the two is the most common mistake when picking a smart home ecosystem.

Two radios, one software layer

Zigbee is a low-power wireless mesh protocol built on the IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard, first standardized in 2003. Mains-powered devices relay messages for battery-powered ones, so the mesh gets more reliable as more devices join it.

Z-Wave does a similar job on a different radio band, sub-1 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz. That band sees far less interference from Wi-Fi routers and Bluetooth devices, which is why Z-Wave has a reputation for reliability in crowded RF environments, at the cost of a smaller device catalog than Zigbee.

Matter is neither of those. It's an application-layer standard published by the Connectivity Standards Alliance that runs over Wi-Fi or Thread, a newer low-power mesh radio. Matter's job is interoperability: a Matter-certified light bulb should work with a Matter controller regardless of which company made either one, something Zigbee and Z-Wave alone never fully solved because each vendor implemented their own app-layer conventions on top of the shared radio.

What this means when you're buying

For a new install with no existing devices, buying Matter-certified products where available and falling back to Zigbee for anything that doesn't yet have a Matter equivalent is the least likely path to end up with a stranded device in a year.
