Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, and Thread: the radios and the software layer that turn a house full of separate gadgets into one system.
Smart home devices split into two jobs: a radio that carries the signal, and increasingly, a software layer that lets devices from different brands understand each other. Zigbee and Z-Wave are the radios, low-power mesh networks that have run lights, locks, and sensors for close to two decades. Matter is the newer piece: not a radio at all, but an interoperability standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance that runs over Wi-Fi or Thread.
The practical effect for anyone buying devices: a Zigbee bulb from one brand and a Zigbee sensor from another have always spoken the same radio language, but not necessarily the same app-layer conventions. Matter is the industry's attempt to fix that gap at the software level, and most new hub hardware now bridges Zigbee or Z-Wave devices into a Matter network rather than replacing them outright.
